I've been chasing these two toms for weeks now. They have either been busy with hens or we play a game of let's see what we can make the hunter do next kind of thing. Yesterday, this and his buddy, that I really want never gobbled on the roost but by 7am they started gobbling and didn't stop until 10am--3 solid hours of gobbling every minute or so trying to find a hen. All they found was me and I called them in, as I've done a dozen or so times this year, only to have them stop 60yds out, figure something wasn't right and back off and start gobbling again. I would re-position and we would play the game again with the same result. I've called aggressive, moderately call and barely call--didn't matter as these are two very smart public land birds.
Fast forward this morning, got setup a little different than normal and setup in an area these two go to everyday and strut around and enter a field. They started gobbling early on the roost at 5:35 and gobbled like crazy e the next 30 minutes, and then silence.... exact opposite of yesterday. I let out a mild yelp sequence at 6:20am and heard nothing back. Waited another 30 minutes and let out another sequence at 6:50 and nothing. I then began to zone out and began dozing off so I pulled out my phone to see what was happening on the here. When I got the browser open, a thundering gobble occurred 6yds in front of me behind a bush I couldn't see through--so loud I felt it in my chest. I was totally unprepared--gun on the ground beside me, mask around my neck and gloves off. One came out from behind the bush but busted me getting my gun up and started to freak out, but he really wanted to find that hen. All of a sudden a hen steps out beside him and I can't shoot. They then started easing off and then the second gobbler stepped out where I had a 20yd shot--things obviously didn't go so well for him. I've made alot of mistakes with these birds and feel that they have taught me more in my young turkey career than any birds have yet. I still have the goal of killing the other one--he is the one I want bad, as he is a bigger, older and a very smart bird, but I'm blessed to have this one. 19.6lbs, 8.75in beard and 1" spurs
