I saw some birds out in a field yesterday at 6:30 and I would've bet 100 dollars 2 were gobblers so we set up on em this mornin. About 6:20 here they come, problem is, they're all hens and I feel like an idiot for wasting 3 peoples morning on hens. We then go to a different spot to try and strike one up because we'd heard a bird way off in that direction. Before I decide to call we walk up on a strutter and of course we spook him. Another mistake to add to my list for the last 5days. As we're walkin out we spook 3 more, 1 of which was a gobbler. Nothing has gone right since opening morning, whether by mistakes we've made or just birds not gobbling and acting wrong. We decide to eat breakfast and go back out. We ease up over a hill and I see a strutter so we circle him to try and get as close as possible. Call twice and get no response so I sit a few minutes and can't stand it, I gotta get eyes on him. I get back to the field and call one more time and see his fan come up. I just have to lay down on my belly because it's all I could do. Never called again and he closed the gap quick and I shot him at 40 or so yards. All the mistakes and frustrations are worth it when it all comes together.
