Shot my second long beard of the year and fourth total ever . I'm self taught and no catman yet haha.

Started the morning hearing one gobbling a few hundred yards away in the woods. I get set up and start light yelping. He keeps hammering, but I wasn't sure if he was gobbling back or just gobbling. I mimic a fly down with my hat only to have a hen that was about 30 yards away pitch down the woods towards him...great.

She leads him away so I decide to try to loop around and get in front of them. All is quiet except for me making a few helps every 20-30 min for about 2 hours then I hear a gobble at a crow from the direction they had headed.

I tried a few light yelps and gradually hear a gobble very slowly getting closer. I finally hear some drumming and hear a gobble but I cannot confirm which bird I'm seeing. I saw a hen first. Then what I thought was a red head came by, but I couldn't see a beard for sure. All the while I keep hearing a gobbling bird behind them that I never saw because of the thick green up. They were probably 40 yards away, but it was thick. They of course skirt me and act like they are heading away.

I try a hail marry and start cutting on the crystal mistress and get a gobble. I then see him looping around to my far right. The other turkeys did not want to come with him and just stood their ground with an occasional cluck. I decided to shoulder my gun left handed to prepare. He gets to 20 yards and I let him have it. The bird falls down the hill and I see a red head flying up in the trees. I thought man I just blew it. I stand up and see my bird flopping.

First time getting 2 long beards in one season. I'm learning that less can be more on calling. Bird weighed 20 pounds, 11.5 inch beards, and 7/8 inch hooks. I would have loved to seen the one that never showed himself but think I am going to end the year with the kill and spend tomorrow with the wife.

Awesome job dude! I laughed out loud at the part about you not knowing is he was gobbling at you or just gobbling. I had the same scenario Tuesday, I'd call and wonder if he actually answered me because he was gobbling non stop. In the end he was as her strutted right to me. I called way more than normal trying to get that 100% for sure answer to me.

Thanks guys! Glad to know I'm not the only one unsure at times haha

Great hunt and congrats.

Trust me, for your self confidence, he was absolutely answering you ;) :D !

Also, congrats on the self taught part. I was also many moons ago.

One great thing about turkey hunting is trying to learn all of the variables that play a factor, and realizing that there is no "right" way. You can hunt the way that you enjoy. Being aggressive with cutts and cackles is the "hook" on most of my successes. So, to me, the cutting wasn't a hail mary!

Cutting helped on my two birds this year. I just called it a hail marry because they had already went past me heading the opposite way. Been my best year so far especially with the weather and mainly only getting to hunt on saturdays.

Congrats on your hunt. I too am self taught and it's a long tough road of frustration but that makes the success all the sweeter. I love the first pic. Well done.

great season for sure, and sounds like you played him just right.

The great (or terrible) thing about turkeys is that no 2 birds are ever alike in what they respond to. I've called sparingly and had it work perfectly (on birds that they would have never come had I called too much), but I've also had birds that I've called to nonstop for 20 minutes to the point where I couldn't catch my breath to get them to commit that would have lost interest if I had only called sparingly. They are so different from one another, and individual birds change moods differently from what they will come to in a single day. That's exactly what makes it so much fun!

Congrats! Keep it up. Two dandy calls in that picture.

I really like them so far. The mistress is easier to ply but the Dawkins sounds great when it's right. I just got the Dawkins this year and am still getting used to it.

They can definitely frustrate you but are fun to chase. I am definitely happy with the two to have mainly only hunting on saturdays. It's always nice hearing the woods come alive regardless.
