This spring has been cool and windy. Sunday morning the weather was nice so I thought I would go hunting a little while before church. As daylight came there was a bird gobbling about 150 yards from me but as he gobbled hens started flying down all under him and that was that. While I watch and listen to this there was another gobbler about 250 yards in another direction, so I take off after him. With good foliage and a logging road I get to about 125 yards of him and start soft calling. Within a few minutes I hear him drumming and walking in the leaves. I have my gun up and ready when I see him go through a small opening. I hear him walking behind a huge oak between us and I get ready, then I see a red head come out from behind the oak, I hesitate to make sure its not a jake that may be with him. He makes one more step and I see he's a long beard and I move the scope below his wattles and squeeze the trigger. At 23yard he barely flops. 20 lbs. 10in beard and 1 1/8in spurs. I hope this nice weather is helping everyone out getting on a gobbling bird.
