4/8/15 was the first day I got to go. Me and my dad arrived a few minutes late but when we got to the top of the hill we heard one gobble way off. Headed in the direction we herd him and could tell we were within 150-200 yards of him. Stopped in the edge of the woods watching a narrow field that connects two bigger fields. I ranges the other side which was 98yards. Started calling and boy was he ready. I played with him for maybe 10-15 minutes and we saw him step into the field. Watched him strut around a while while coming closer and closer. I should have ranged it again but didn't and that almost cost me. I decided he was about 40yards and Fired. He went down but started up again and my dang gun jammed never had that happen. So dad fired knocking him down again. I figured we had a dead bird so we head up there and he jumps up and starts running. I put him down at about 20yards with my Mossberg 500. It was only 25minutes from leaving truck to pulling the trigger.
I went to where he was first standing when I shot and it was 52yards not 40. Hate it that we had to shoot him so many times but live and learn I guess. This was my 2nd gobbler ever. Beard isn't huge, measured exactly 8inches
Today I bought some new shells and patterned em, and at 50yards my pattern had twice as many pellets in the head/neck area of a turkey target so hopefully that will prevent me from having this issue again. I got lucky and didn't loose it. Sure is fun calling em in.
