Had a really slow start to the morning. Heard a few birds but all of them were on adjoining properties and none of them seemed to want any part of the fields we were in. Decided to head to a different spot where I'd been seeing some hens. As luck would have it there was a strutter in the field with them. Tried to just put the sneak on him but he was just out of range. Backed out and circled around him up on the timbered ridge next to field. Got lucky and he gobbled once on his own to give up his location. I just got above him and called one time. He came straight up the hill to me to about 40 yards and didn't see the hen he heard. I had a clear shot at him but wasn't certain of the distance so opted not to shoot. He eased back away from me and got down below me on the side of the little ridge. I decided to go for broke and crawled my way about 30 yards down the hill hoping that since I couldn't see him he couldn't see me. I crawled up behind a large tree and peaked my head around it to see him 20 yards below me strutting away. I let myself catch my breath and eased up and let him have it.
