According to NWTF Records, this bird is in a three-way tie for #31 Typical Osceola!!
Flew into Orlando for the central zone opener and was able to connect on my first Osceola at 9:45 Saturday morning! There were 0 gobbles on the limb, but at 8:00 am he gobbled to one of my calls from behind me. All I had time to do was turn around before he had made it to the barbed wire fence around 180 yards up the hill. After trying to pull him over the fence for nearly an hour, I finally gave up on that idea and stopped calling completely. After he got bored with that I made a big circle around and got up to the fence about 80 yards from where he was strutting in the hayfield. Hit him with a couple soft purs and the rest is history!
That afternoon I had another Tom in gun range on the same property, but the landowner graciously let me hunt that property for free. He has some relatives that also were wanting to hunt, so I decided to not be greedy and let the tom walk so that maybe one of them could get their first turkey.
The next morning we headed out to another farm without much luck. Heard a couple of toms on the roost but they made their way to other properties we could not hunt. We saw several jakes and hens, but no longbeards to be found. The highlight of day 2 was this big rascal near the farm we hunted! I was ready to head back to TN after seeing this!
It was an AWESOME trip! Now it's time to move on to our local birds!
