After two seasons of nothing, I was able to kill my first public land bird and second longbeard.
I went to the spot I planned on hunting yesterday only to hear one bird gobbling across the lake. I jumped in the car and drove to where I thought the gobbling bird was. I was able to get him to answer me for a while then e decided to go with his girls. I was unable to get a response from him. I went back that evening and heard nothing and decided to fish for a while then try to owl hoot one to roost one.
I was back this morning and he had roosted in the same spot. I set up the same way he went the previous day hoping for better luck. About 7 hens pitched down right in front of me and went towards him hammering on the roost. After about an hour of light calling and no response, I heard some leave rustling. He had been close enough to hear drumming for most of the morning, but I couldn't see him. He followed a hen, but I didn't feel good with the shot he presented. He turned and walk off with the hen. I decided to put the crystal mistress down and pulled out my lights out aluminum. I got him to respond to some cuts followed by yelps.
After about 15 min he was headed back my direction. He looped around to my right and slowly got close enough for a shot. The 20 gauge did its job to give me my first public land bird.
