After losing our lease that we had for 9 years, we picked up 250 acres directly behind our old one. It is 40% bean fields and 60% woods. It has a power line running straight through the middle of it that has a few large hills in it. It has thick hardwoods on either side and is about 40 yards wide. However, it does look like it could be easily planted. My question is, what would be the best thing to plant on a power line? I have access to a tractor with bush hog and tiller. Thanks in advance!

Wheat/Grain Rye/Oats are the easiest to grow and least expensive. They can be planted in late August so weed control won't be an issue. If you want to spend some more add some crimson or red clover, turnips and rape. Do a $7 Ag. Extension soil test to determine what is needed in the way of fertilizer. The soil test will tell you how much lime to add if needed. Lime if needed is usually added at 2 tons/acre. The lime can be expensive if you spread bags of pelletized or inexpensive if you have a way to spread ag. lime. Lime lasts for a number of years. If you aren't sure you will have the lease for a number of years you may want to skip the lime if the Ph isn't too acidic. I believe lime is recommended when Ph is below 6. Grain Rye is tolerant of acid soil and has deep roots. Deer like oats the best, then wheat, then rye. Oats may die in very cold weather.

treefarmer,

Briefest, most succinct response to the food plot question I've seen in a long time! Good post!
