If you just have a 12 guage shotgun, say an "all-around" shotgun with a factory modified (or other) choke . . . . .
these shells might be worth buying:

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting ... t104567580

These new shotshells from Hornady have a special wad that makes the patterns tighter. They sound similar to the Federal Flight-Control wads, but with a big improvement on the pellets: Double Nickel plating over lead. Nickel is harder than copper, so these should penetrate better than copper-plated lead.

The Hornady Versatite wad does the patterning for you and often works best with an improved-cylinder or modified choke. Each shell is loaded with 1-1/2 oz. of nickel-plated lead shot pellets that have the thickest nickel plating of any shotshell on the market, minimizing shot deformation and reducing fliers to keep more pellets on target in dense patterns. Per 10. Made in USA.

And for only $13.95 (box of 10) that seems to be a very competitive price.

Sounds like a good deal .......I shot lead for a long time and hornady is a great ammunition company.....I shoot Hevi shot.......but I will be the first to say at 40 yrds and in lead is deadly ......and let's face it dead is dead Hevi shot does kill a bird and more dead than lead just may extend you range a little

i would love to see some around here try them but I have seen more then a few reviews on these shells and NONE have been very positive even shooting them as honady recommends choke wise.

also it is unbuffered shot which is a first sign of things not very positive.

I am not saying they are junk as i have not shot them just passing on what info i have read on them to this point from a bunch of guys that do alot of shooting. for the price they may be worth a try to see how they do in your gun and they may shoot great out of it.

I shot them 2 weekends ago out of my 870 with tightwad choke. they were not good. Also shot them out of my dads 1187 with xtra full turkey choke. Also not good. We changed the choke on the 1187 to an improved cylinder and it was even worse.

How many's left?

I've decided Kent turkey loads are my favorite and they are not buffered, but I'm not looking for a tight pattern either though.

Oh, so you don't like them as good as Kents. Any idea why it's only 1 1/2 ounce in a 3" shell. Are they high velocity? The Kents I shoot are 2 3/4" 1 1/2 ounce at 1400fps and 1 5/8 ounce at 1285fps.

My understanding is these shells were not designed for specialized turkey chokes. They were designed more for those who would just like to go turkey hunting with a gun on hand, commonly with a factory modified choke.

Certainly wouldn't expect them to pattern anything like a Hev-13 coming out a very tight turkey choke. But for their target market, they may be a good value.

In times past I would recommend someone try the Federals with their "Flight-Control" wad, which are also very reasonably priced and many shooters do like those. What stood out with these new Hornady shells to me was the thick nickel plating on the pellets, as opposed to the more common copper plating, or cheaper lead pellets having no plating at all.

But if the price of the shells is of little concern, I'd recommend all shooters simply give straight 7's (Hevi-13) a try.

Bought my first box of Kent the other week. Shooting 2 3/4" shells only doesn't leave many options. The only options that I did find were Kent and Winchester and the Kent was a hotter load.

From the add:

Delivers dense patterns at extended ranges without special chokes
Pellets have the thickest nickel plating in the industry, reducing deformation
Produces lethal results out to 50 yards

from some of the pattern pictures i have seen out of even the recommended chokes there is NO WAY you should shoot these shells at 50yds, heck there are very few shells on the market that should be shot at that distance.

Some of the patten pics i have seen (again even out of recommended chokes) were only putting 30-40 shots in the kill zone (10" circle) at 40yds which is VERY VERY low for ethical shooting.

as i said before, every gun is different so someone else may get great results from them.

:D

Like Ren said, from searching a week or so ago when a similar post came up, I could find no one who has tried them to recommend them others.

Guy's I killed several of my first turkey's with a modified choke 870 glossy finished wingmaster that would only shoot 2 3/4 shells, with high brass #6's. We're talking back in the 1970's. No one knew what a turkey choke was, and there was no such thing as a turkey load! Come to think of it they're were only a handful of turkey hunters period, most places in Tennessee had no turkeys. We have certainly come a long way from them days!
