As for specific fried chicken joints, only two come to mind: Uncle Lou's and Gus's.

Uncle Lou's is not your typical place that specializes in crispy, spicy chicken. But his relies on a dip in a watery sauce that is pretty delectable.
Gus's locations are individually franchised branches of the original in Mason, TN. The chicken is generally pretty good, a little bit spicy, and depending on location, may or may not serve sides, fries, vegetables, and beer. The original in Mason sells the batter to the franchises, and the ownership can do about whatever they want with the restaurant. The original only serves bad slaw, good chicken, and a foul attitude.

However, the best fried chicken places are generally overshadowed by the famous joints. If you want some good soul and some excellent chicken, the Gay Hawk on south Thomas probably has the best in town. Say what you want about the name, but the food is spectacular.

The new Gus's building in Bartlett is not open yet. Still in the same strip behind it.

Gus's are still franchises but Wendy, that owns the downtown location now owns the franchise rights. All the batter comes from her now and not the Mason location. Also she has made all the locations menu's consistent to maintain your franchise. So all locations sell the same thing. The owner does not have the right to do as he wishes, just the same as a McDonalds.

Good to hear. They used to be inconsistent as all getout, and that's how it used to be run. I suppose once she demonstrated a clear ability to maintain their brand, she got a little more control :D

Gus's in Brentwood TN closed. There is a Zaxby's there now. Chicken was good but the sides seemed like they were straight from a can. Fried pickles and fried tomatoes were very pricey. 6 pickle spears for $6 and I think 5 or 6 fried green tomatoes slices for $6.

There is a Gus's in memphis very close to mendenhall and poplar. Parking can be a pain cause it's an odd shaped parking lot. across the street to Gibson's donuts which is worth the drive lol
