Monday I sat cross legged behind a big slab of limestone and called in a gobbler to 20 yards, drew my bow, got the pin on him and then shot the top of the rock. Today, I'm at the same rock, had a gobbler come in completely silent except for the occasional drumming. After a while of him hanging in shotgun range but out of bow range, he finally came close enough I drew back and slowly got the pin on him. I needed him to clear a group of small trees for a possibly clear shot. Somehow from behind those trees, he decided something wasn't right and putt putted away through the trees. I want to get one with the bow but each blown opportunity makes me think a little more about grabbing the shotgun. I will try a couple more times though... I've killed 3 and want the last one with an arrow thru him

I'm going to try to kill one with my .410 in Nebraska in a couple weeks, but I still haven't manned up enough to go bow only. I will one day, but I'm not sure when. When I do it, it will be without a blind and I will probably screw it up a bunch before I succeed. In my opinion, calling in and killing a turkey with a bow from the ground without a blind is the most commendable/hardest hunting one can do in this area (and lots of areas). Good luck with it Cat.

Quit screwing around with the stupid bow and fill his face with a load of lead. Dam man you're killing me with this purist stuff :D

Hats off for trying the bow thing, I can't bring myself to lay down the scattergun. The thought of one getting in and out of there again because of a bow in my hand makes me queezy.

I know it makes me a bit queezy too but it's a bucket list item and I'd love to get it done just once. I figure I already got 3 toms this year and some states only let you kill 1 or 2, so I'm not getting skunked if I don't get one with the bow. But it sure is educating these public land birds even more...

Got an idea...take me with you and if you can kill him with a bow good deal. If he hangs up or tries to run i'll hit him with some Longbeard 5's. :D
nimrod was hunting across the creek and I told him he should have been there to do just that :D

Like I say, the hardest part about killin one with a bow is leaving the gun at home. You might try a strutter, to get the attention off of you. Once it has greened up good, I keep a tree between me and the gobbler, if not hunting in a pop up blind. I like the strutter decoys, he will come in facing the head. If he struts in, and turns with his fan towards you, its a giveme on the draw. Lots of fun. anybody can kill em with a gun.

I'm gonna stay away from the dekes, especially strutters being its public land and also a lot of the birds are 2 year olds that would probably spook at a strutter.

Oh and btw tickweed, every time I have taken my bow this spring I have thought of your quote below your posts, and told myself I am still gonna leave the shotgun behind. But I still leave it in the truck, just haven't touched it
