After an uneventful morning, I came back to camp to fix some breakfast. Camp adjoins a WMA that is open with regular season. I heard this bird gobble a long way away 3 times. I worked my way in following the river and set up about where I thought it might be. Almost immediately I called in a hen and a jake. They came and went 4 different times with no long beard in tow. I eased forward maybe 30 yards and could hear drumming. I eased forward aliitle more and could see down into a slough with cypress knees. I hit the call once more and this guy came strutting through the cypress knees right to me. This is all I could ever dream for South Georgia public land. I think it's time to head home tomorrow, even though I did plan on staying two more days.

How far would you estimate him to be when you heard him? Just curious....

Again, how far you think he was at this point? I used to could hear them drumming at 60-80 yards, maybe more, but I am thinking more like 40-50 now (suspect I have some hearing loss in my left ear). Just trying to get an idea of how much stuff I don't hear these days.

Were you able to finish breakfast before going after him?

I just checked on my huntstand app. It is closer than what I thought. Walking it, I would have guessed a lot further, with it so thick in the river bottom, I guess it seemed farther than I thought. According to this it was about 500 yards, assuming he was still in the same relative area. Drumming was probably 70-80ish but even at that it was one of those "is that really what it is" type of deals where you are second guessing but you just know that it has to be.

Thanks for the feedback, and congrats again on getting in'em this weekend.
