Got my daughter off to jr prom last night, made with thru the storms on the way up, then got a whopping 3h sleep last night.
Went in blind to a farm I saw a couple LBs when I was up scouting 3 weeks ago. Hiked .75 miles in, then realized I left my diaphragm calls on the floorboard of the truck.... great... lack of sleep will do that. Posted up at my listening spot, nothing... once it got light enough to feel safe moving to the head of a timber block surrounded by fields, I crept along glassing the trees ahead... nothing. Got set up, and a couple minutes later, an entire gang of Male birds cut loose from what sounded like the same tree 125yds away. 5 min later, they pitched to the field and the hens cut loose in the trees. They came down and 4 Tom's and about 20 hens gathered together and started milling. Both hens and Tom's would answer most of my calls on the pot, but the ladies weren't interested in coming. The Tom's def weren't interested in leaving the real thing. They moved off and I made a big loop to reposition on the opposite side of the woodblock. Called a few times, and they wad comes into view 150yds out. 2 coyotes made a stalk on them un the field, but couldn't do anything with them in the open. The gobblers got fired back up and I kept talking sparingly. Eventually, the group made it to 60 yards when I heard a gobbler cluck off my right shoulder. I glanced over and there were 2 more lbs and 4 Jake's in a bachelor group 100y away. I figured they'd join the big group, but seemed more interested in my calling instead. Over the next 10 min, they worked in to 75 yds, then the Jake's started fighting. I cut loose with a series of fighting purrs from the underbrush I was hidden in, and they started coming slowly. Once the group hit 50 yards, the switch flipped and all 6 ran full speed right at me. I had no shot without killing 4 or 5 of them until 12 yards, when 1 lb broke off to the side. Never seen one hit the dirt so fast. The rest moved back to 40 yards and clucked, the big flock went back to gobbling and strutting 75yds away. I waited another hour till all the birds moved off to claim my trophy.
I figured he was going to be a 2yo, and spurs confirmed. Really thick beard, a nice bonus. But when I picked him up, I couldn't believe how heavy he was for a 2yo. I estimated him at 22lbs
Back at the farmhouse, I had to break out the official scales.... 23.1 lbs.... my biggest 2yo ever!
So this season, I've killed both my smallest 2yo as well as biggest 2yo. And that may be the only bird I've ever called up without a diaphragm call in the mix.
