Gobble Report 5/7

I almost posted this in the "Silence" thread, but that's turned in to a pissing contest, and what I lack in turkey hunting experience I make up for in judgement. Ha!

I was on public land this morning, and they were gobbling their heads off. I saw two grass-draggers. One busted me, and I left the other alone to have a better shot in the morning because I've seen him out there on a pretty regular basis.

They may be done with the classic, early-season roost and roast, but until 5/12 hits, no one with an empty tag has to be done.

Yep I knew they aint done. Take my thoughts for what its worth, alot of people on here have different opinions, but my favorite times are from April 22 to the last day. Gobblers are lonely and most fair weather hunters quit huntin and start fishin. Several have already limited out as well.
 
I'm with you on I'll quit chasing them after Sunday. My buddy lives in Murfreesboro and sent me a pic of three in full strut behind his house this morning. He said they were gobbling their heads off. It was so foggy I went back to sleep because I figured they'd stay in the tree and I didn't have long as it was.
 
They gobbled heavy this morning in greeneville too. Unfortunately they were not interested in any calls at all. Heard a lot of birds and seen a group of five on the neighboring property.

You can call the "Silence" thread a pissing contest if you want but there is some good information in there if you will take time to read it. I would say compare some of the info to what the birds are actually doing in your area. Like someone posted in this thread 5 birds gobbling like crazy but didn't want to hear a call.....one great thing about turkey hunting things change from day to day.

Oh, I will share this too, an old timer once told me this about turkey hunting "the hunting only gets a little worse each day" at first I thought he was crazy but now I understand exactly what he means and if anyone who reads this don't agree, you will if you hunt long enough.
 
I took the time to read it. I called it what it is, but yes, there's certainly some good info' there.

All turkey hunting can't be calling just like all deer hunting can't be rattling. Tactics change. For me, I don't know if it's worse with each day, but it's certainly different. So far, I like to compare it to a video game: it gets a bit more difficult with each new level (day).

I watched a tom get all over a hen this morning. He gobbled on the roost, answered my calls, flew down in the field, and he'd have come my way had a real hen not grabbed his attention first. I should've brought my decoys. I will in the morning, though.
 
I feel like a kid again going back to Punch Out or even Mario working the last level over and over to try and win. Sometimes I wish I weren't this way. When I try to take on something new, i.e. turkey hunting, instead of just being happy to take a turkey, I want to find out what the most difficult thing is and conquer that quickly. I got one the typical way (roost and roast), I got a silent public land bird, and now, for some reason, I've gotten it in my head that taking one now is one of those difficult things, so I'm kinda "hung up" on it.
 
All I am hearing here is jakes. The big boys have gone quiet but they are still out trolling. I see toms strutting still but they are scattered more than they were. I have 4 good birds that I have seen and am trying to get my 4th but it is tough. I saw 1 yesterday with 8 hens, I hunted hard all afternoon and when I walked to the truck they were 40 yds from it. Go figure.
 
I've been chasing these crazy birds for 27 years and I'm with woodman. Give me the last two weeks over the first two weeks anytime.

Just depends on the season. Some yrs such as last yr I wouldn't gave you a dime for the last 2 weeks. Don't think this past week has been much from what I can tell. Other yrs this can be a great time.
 
Been a good last week in South Cherokee so far. Killed another two year old on Tuesday that gobbled at least 25 times from the limb to the gun. Killed a real good turkey on Thursday. He gobbled one time on the limb, flew down and shut up. 45 minutes later he came lookin for that bubble cluckin, leaf scratchin hen. Gobbler had good 1 1/4 spurs. Trying to get pics of him posted. Got beat by another this morning that gobbled off and on till 8:15. He's in trouble in the morning. Should be a good last day weather wise, nice and cool.
