I've never hunted anything but Osceolas and Easterns, but this year I'm going to chase them white tail feather birds around. Just got my tags for S.D. in the mail today. I will be hunting in the Rose Bud Indian reservation. Anybody hunt there or in S.D. I hear the weather is very unpredictable?

Me and a buddy hunted South Dakota last May. We hunted on some private land just south of Wall(east of Rapid City). Saw LOTS of birds. One evening we saw over 200 birds. They varied in distance from 100yds to as much as 3-4 miles. Hunted 3 1/2 days and we each got a longbeard and a jake. We had the jakes in range within the first hour of being on the place and we let them go.......until the last evening. It was a very exciting hunt. Very different than hunting in the south. No run and gun. Nearly all blind hunting. Very open. LOTS and LOTS of gobbling. Call at any tom you see no matter how far away he is. I called one in from close to a mile away. We saw him come across the hill. I called to him with my box and a few seconds later my buddy saw him gobble through binoculars. Neither of us could hear him. He came like he was on a string. The weather was pretty good for us. We did see temps in the low 20s and some hail but overall fair spring weather.

Overall, I loved it. Would I go back? Definitely!!!! The only drawback for us was the 16 hour drive from Memphis. Will STRONGLY consider flying next time.

Hey and thanks,
Congratulation on your birds and a great time. What month did you go, the guide service told me that the birds are'nt responding to calls untill early May, so we are going to be there May 9th. Hope he is right!
Thanks everyone for wishing me luck and I hope everyone tags out this year. I'll have pics and inform everyone about the trip.
God bless, Dave Walker

good luck and have a great time. I am the same as you, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina birds. I tried to kill a bird in Iraq that I swore was a dessert turkey but it turned out to be a tribal leaders pet dessert chicken, that did not go over to well.
