A buddy of mine showed me his new Benelli Outlander this past week and I really liked how it felt.

Unless I change my mind or I hear bad reviews from him between now and then I do believe that is what I am gonna go with.
I can't research it right now but the only other kicker is if they offer it in a 20 gauge.

I have decided to go with the 20 gauge in my next turkey gun.

Lighter weight gun, maybe a few ounces, and much less recoil.
Never been bothered by it and still ain't much, but after I hurt my arm I hunted dove with my dads 1100 that he left me and found I could kill just as many doves with it as I do my 12 and it was MUCH more enjoyable.

Soooo my question is this:

What is your best load / choke combo if you hunt turkey with a 20?

This will be my first year turkey hunting with a 20g also, but lots of people rave about the Federal Heavyweight #7 (from all the reading I've done on GobblerTalk).

The Hevi 13 #7 also seems to be popular, which is what I'm going to try out first.

Seems like I remember hearing about those before.
I just tend to think #7 would be awful light shot.
But, there should be a hatfull of them in there though. :D

Most guys shoot federal heavyweights 7's. When you compare weight, density, and ballistics you can see why. The problem being with the flight control wad they are very fickle on choke tube constriction/type. IF you can make it happen, have someone reload you some tss 7's in a traditional wad and enjoy the results.

Guessing you are talking about the Beretta A300 Outlander.....Unless something has changed since the last time I got my paws on one, they only offered it in 12 Gauge and 3" chamber...

Walk out to 40 yards and let me shoot you in the rear end with some #7 and tell me how light they are.

Tru glo turkey choke and magnum blends. Killed a Turkey at 40 yards with that combo.

Go heavier than lead with a 20, and the smallest shot you can. HW 7s hit about like lead 5s, and you can stuff a whole lot more of them into a shell. I think the Federal HW is denser than Hevi shot (not for sure on this). If so, I'd shoot it if it patterns decent through your gun. Check out the oldgobbler forum for everything 20 ga turkey guns.

Heavyweight 7 are KING in the 20g world unless you get into TSS reloading. nothing beats with with density and overall kill performance in a 20g, that shell will kill them further then you want to shoot at one. they are fickle on chokes but not to bad. I ended up using my M2 20g more last year then my 12 SBE2 that i built specifically for turkey hunting.

Yeah that is pretty much what I found out last night after I got home. :(

Sooo now I gotta figure out which gun to buy. :D

Ruger, I recommend that you take a look at the Franchi Affinity 20 gauge. It weighs less than 6 pounds and gets great reviews. I'm buying one as soon as duck season is over. I've shot both a Remington 870 20 gauge and a Winchester SX3 20 gauge the past few seasons with the Fed. Hvwt 7's and the definitely do the number an old gobbler's noggin.

i had one and it was a sweet shooter. paired with a carlson's and heavyweight 7 it was a 180 at 40 gun all day long.
