I've got a chufa field they haven't worked yet, and I've been fighting the urge to disc it up where they'll find the tubers. It is time, hoping to capitalize on it for juvenile season. Updates to come!
Also, I'm going to disc up some rows in old corn fields- I've always had good luck where they dig for worms and snails in the fresh dirt early season. We're in pop up blinds with my 8 year old so I need any advantage I can get. When he tags, my older boy and I may chase em.
No decoys this year...just going to pattern some birds and do some light calling.

I see your location as Jackson TN so you're just a little northwest of me...what kind of dirt did you plant that chufa in? I've tried it a number of times in different types of soil and have never been able to pull off a what I'd consider a successful crop. Sandy soil?

And yeah, freshly turned dirt is a turkey magnet.

If you have chufa, they will be there. Turkeys also love a plowed field. Good luck to your 8 year old. Im trying to get my almost 8 year old one too. Also, don't sweat the pop up blind and decoys. Do what you want and have fun. That's what its all about. Doing stuff with your children is what its all about. My best memories are with my parents doing special things with me. I cant remember specifics about all the things but I can remember that they did it because they loved me.

The only time I've hunted around chufa was at LBL and the turkeys loved it. I had a field I'd have loved planting in it but the farmer had other ideas.

If it took using a decoy to draw a bird in for my kid's first bird I wouldn't hesitate in using one at all. He'll get the excitement of watching one gobbling and strutting coming in and once that initial hook is set they should be ready to roll.

Had a well drained area with a lot of sand in it. Seems to be the best to have well drained. Didn't do well in other spots with clay

I'm not anti decoy, just seems they spook as many as they draw in, so I've had better luck patterning feeding and strut zones etc. until he's old enough to start fanning with me :stir:
