Well I accomplished three firsts this morning (at least I'd like to thinks so). I got to my set up before it started to get light, so I was there as everything woke up. However I didn't hear one gobble. I knew these birds were there. I have been watching them for 2 weeks or more. Was there yesterday around 9 am and they were just on the property next to me. Well around 6:45 I swear i heard a tree yelp but couldn't be sure. (FYI My land is right off a major hwy, hearing can be difficult....) well I just sat there and didn't call or anything. For those that don;t know I have never called a turkey in. I always just sneak up on em and shoot them. I was sitting there and I looked out in front of me and there was a doe standing there. My land is in Rutherford Co and we have deer, but i have never seen more than 5 in one sit on my property. Well of course here comes the train. 7 in total, so i set a personal best there. Well around 7 I wear i heard another yelp in the distance behind me and on my neighbors property. I knew thats where they come from, as I used to be able to hunt back there. At 7:15 i decided it was time to call but I was thinking I'll probably scare anything off in the area. After thinking about it for 5 minutes or so I decided what the heck. I started with some cutting and would mix in a yelp. I've been working on it, listening to sound files, and watching Youtube videos. I've gotten better but I am still not good. Sure enough right after i finished my sequence I heard a hen cut back at me. Not 45 seconds later a whole gaggle of hens came through the hole in the fence into my property. They were in some stuff and I let a tom slip right through the one opening I had. Luckily i knew there were two. I kept watching and the second came in strutting. He got in the hole and I made a mouth cluck and he put his neck up. I gave him a face full of Mag blends and he was down. I'd like to believe I at least called the Hens to me and they brought the Toms, so that would be the first birds I've called in. Last thing, I have never killed one on opening morning, so that was a first.
Great morning to be in the woods. I was blessed for sure. Not my best bird, but I am happy with him.
