I have been hunting hard this year and decided why not kick it up a notch your only 44 yrs old you can hack it  (my legs are sore). I took off W-TH as I was off today. I have passed 3 jakes already but have only heard one bird gobble twice on opening day from private land. I thought that there were no turkeys left till I checked the kill #s [emoji50].

I started just picking areas go to it, strike out and pick a new area. Last night I went to an area I had never been and honestly didn't know was open till I saw it on the map. Well I got close but he roosted. I figured I could kill him quick this morning but he made me work some and I got a show for it. I got set well before sun up. He gobbled 8-10 times from the limb and finally pitched. I called, he gobbled a bunch and I could tell he was getting close. Unfortunately I couldn't see this rise in the woods in the dark and he hung up just gobbling and strutting. He was 60 yds or so out, so he was out of range. He eased off back into thick stuff gobbling his fool head off. I waited and called again and he started gobbling again. This time he came in over my right shoulder and hung up at the edge of the thick stuff. Then eased off. I assumed it was over. I called and no answer. I'd call every 20 minutes and nothing. About 8:30 I called and he gobbled about 100 yds out then he gobbled and seemed like he was going back to the rise I saw him on first. I waited couldn't find him called lightly and gobbled over my right shoulder again at the edge of the thick stuff. I could see him so I just sat there. 5-7 minutes of gobbling and looking and finally he started coming. Issue is I'm right handed and I didn't want to switch. He strutted by at 15 yds. I let him pass and he started vectoring to his rise. When he did that I got on him and shot him at 25 yds.

THAT got to the heart to pounding!

Great hunt and story.

Congrats!

Is it me, the pic, or the turkey? He looks maybe slightly red colored/cinnamon phased? Look at his center tail feathers, his secondary and primary wing feathers, and his wing coverts. He looks awesome.

Its him. He is uniquely colored. His fan has 3 feathers that had (what looked to me) like a white/tan color in them. I don't know much about the color phases. I do love (what i call) a salt&pepper color phase bird. I did mention to my wife his wings looked odd to me. I wish I knew more about the phases. I may have gotten him mounted. I did keep the fan.

Cool bird! You legs will harden as the season progresses. I did 11 miles the past 2 days and I feel like I haven't walked a half mile.
