Good morning....and i will give the short version
took a buddy of mine out from HS and he was my best friend from HS and College (roomate). He is a city boy for sure but always like to go out hunting from time to time. I got him his first deer a few years back down in bama so he finally moved to Nashville about 2 years ago. Finally talked him into turkey hunting and he was PUMPED about it...i mean he could not sleep last night thinking about going. We go out to one of my spots this morning and get all set up on a field edge i knew they were flying down into before light. Got him set up (looking like Elmer Fudd because he owns no camo he had to borrow some hahah). Birds started gobbling as expected and he is now super pumped (could actually see the barrel of my gun shaking at this point). I call a few times to let them know we are there and 4 nice long beards fly down out in front of us about 100yds and go into strut. I hit them with a little jake gobble and here they come. At about 40yds he is not doing so well hahahah i mean the nerves are starting to show. I tell him to breath deep and shoot when i tell him. at about 20yds all 4 are in strut and he is hanging on by a thread so at this point I decide to take a different route to try and help him (plus i have had 2 people miss already this year) i decide to shoot first. I tell him when i shoot get ready and shoot the one to the right!!! dont even think about it just aim for his head and roll him on the ground....well at 12yds i let the new stoeger 2000 go and rolls up #1 and as i told him he blasts #2 and rolls him dead!!!!! he is so excited i thought he was going to have a heart attack ahahah.....side note after we shot those 2 8 other LB's fly down in the field and 6 more in the field on the other side of the creek. saw 17 total LBs and Jakes and all this by 7:30am!!! man it was the best hunt for a newbie ever...heck on his way home he called me and just said "dude i feel like a MAN now" ahahahah, well he is now hooked!!
my bird 11inch beard and 1inch spurs.
his bird 9inch beard and 3/4inch spurs
here is me with both
here is the proud newbie with his first bird....funny is it still has a partial jake fan even with decent beard and spurs
