finally got first bird in long time....hunted last weekend and this weekend and couldnt quite get it...called one up and had hens cut him off, didnt see anything, all kinds of nothing happening...
went this morning with a guy and his son and had some luck... we sat on one side of a field where the birds have usually been and didnt have a thing close to us....after a short while and hearing gobbling on the other side i talked him into moving and we did...got closer to them and they were gobbling back every time we hit the call...we split up in case they came from a different angle...there were 3 gobbling in the group and they were coming our way... they sounded like they were coming to me but then went toward them...a few minutes later i heard boooommm... he blasted a good one at 10 yards... the bird came right up to him outta no where, the funny thing is he hit the blow up decoy when he shot too...he just turned 14 and was tore to pieces...it was a double bearded tom with a 10 inch and 3 inch beard..spurs were right at an inch...needless to say he was tickled
i went this afternoon to the same place and had luck also...i got to the field and hit the call and heard one gobble fairly close..i set up and he hit it a few times then just quit... i moved up some and hit it again and still nothin...so i had a spot i wanted to go and on the way there i looked in a grown up field and saw him standing there about 120 yards down...i hit the grown behind a cedar and started calling and watching...he was strutting the whole time and walking my way..he would not gobble at all...when he finally got within 80 yards i saw the 2 hens he was following...they were leading him right to me and he was spitting the whole way...i was going to let him get as close a possible but for some reason the hens stopped at about 40 yards or so and turned around...after watching this bird strut for more then 30 mins i had to take a shot...it was hard to tell how far he was because i was laying down but i thought he was close enough...he turned while in full strut and i pulled the trigger...he went to flopping and seemed like trying to get up...i put another one in him to make sure he didnt go anywhere
my bird
Beard 10.5 inches
spurs 1.25
first bird in a very long time...very exciting day
