Had the pleasure of carrying a youth on the juvy hunt for the first time this morning. Started the morning in a narrow cornfield. Had a couple hens fly down to us but the gobblers were across the creek in the next field over. We tried to circle them with no luck. Headed down the road a ways and found a couple more gobblers with a wad of hens. We successfully called them off their hens, but they circled us about 60 yards and got above us and started strutting. We were watching them trying to develop a plan to move on them when a truck, coming down a major highway, in the middle of a nasty curve, somehow spotted the birds from the road. He stopped in the middle of the road and actually ended up backing up to get a better look at them. Needless to say they didn't stick around long. We left there and headed back to our original starting point and found a big group of birds in a green field. After a lot of sneaking and crawling we finally got in a position that we thought would allow us to coax the birds in. It didn't take but a couple soft yelps to get one of his hens coming in talking, and he followed right behind. First longbeard for the young man and an awesome morning.
