Opening morning I had one gobbling right at daylight. He was almost out of hearing but I gave my homemade box call a workout. He really never answered my calls but every time I heard him he was just a little bit closer.
Finally around 10:30 I saw him on top of the ridge in full strut. I called softly a couple of times and he cautiously made his way down the ridge. Closest he came was around 75 yds. He finally turned and slowly walked out of sight.
I packed my gear up and walked back to the house and figured I would give it another try after I finished some chores.
3:00 found me back in the woods sitting with my back against a big White Oak overlooking a small food plot. I had just got settled in when I heard footsteps. As I looked up I saw the unmistakable red head of a Tom Turkey making his way into the Winter wheat and clover. Great I thought, my shotgun was lying across my lap and I hadn't even had time to put on my face mask. He finally turned his head away from me and I slowly raised my gun and put the bead on his big ugly head. He went down at the shot and I had my first 2021 bird in hand.
Not a monster but pretty sure it was the same bird I saw that morning and I was tickled to take him. 9" beard 3/4" spurs.
