First I will preface this by saying I ain't much of a turkey hunter. This is just my 2nd kill with a shotgun-have got a few with my pickup lol. Any way my grandaddy was a big turkey hunter back in the day. He was dirt poor but had a LC Smith 30" F&F that he used for everything. I sat near him as a child many times and heard grand tales of turkeys and turkey hunting. But back to this bird; I named him old gobbly as I have seen him about 7 times this season. I knew where his bedroom was but everytime he was too far and one time he got too close, busted me and alarmed clucked and ran off leaving me sitting and looking like an idiot. This morning he wasn't roosted in his bedroom but after he flew down I heard him gobbling about 150 yards away. I made a few series of yelps a few times and he answered every time. He started moving toward me and gobbled occasionally. I just shut up on the call as I ain't much of a caller either. When I had just about given up after not hearing a gobble for 10 min I spotted him easing along the fence line well within range. I was hiding behind an oak but he saw my elbows or something move and he started alarm clucking-I decided to go for it, pulled the shotgun down fast and fired. He ran in a little circle and I fired again. He was finished. Equipment: Benelli Nova, full choke, 3" Winchester #5 turkey load, Knight and Hale Ole Yeller slate. Bird: 17.2#, 1.25" spurs, 9" beard, Persistence paid off. PH
