I saw a piece by Grant Woods that said a good way to age a buck is to stick a 2x4 under his front legs and see which way he tips. If he balances he's a 3.5 year old but if he tips forward he's 4.5 or older. He definitely tips forward!

fairchaser can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he is describing a literal aging technique. He is just referring to how "front heavy" a deer looks. If he looks like he weighs more from the front shoulder forward than he does from the front shoulder back, he's probably mature.

Ain't no deer on the planet gonna weigh more from the front shoulder forward than front shoulder backwards.
