This is the first Saturday in years I wasn't in the turkey woods @ sun up. My 4 yr. old had her first soccer game ever this a.m. I surly was not gonna miss my little girls game. She was some kinda pumped about getting to play.
Anyway, I had my turkey gear in the truck & headed out to some private land I have permission to hunt. My first stop was on a 80 acre piece. Hunted there for an hour & a half. Didn't see or hear a thing. Went to another spot 5 minutes away. About 55 acres of hills & hollers. Found a good tree on the side of a ridge & called. 30 min later I finally hear a gobble on another ridge (11:30). I split the difference, sit down & called again to see where he was. He didn't gobble for 10 min or so. I then made my way to the bottom of the wooded ridge he was on. I called & he would answer. This went on for 20 min or so without any commitment from him. With the woods so open I didn't want to get busted coming up & making noise. I backed out a little ways & went up the ridge further back. I get up to the top & he has shut up. I hear nothing for 20 min. I then hear a gobble down at the bottom where I had been earlier. I ease back down & set up. I can't see him through some thick stuff but I would guess 60 yards or so from his gobbles. I'm waiting, waiting and then hear a 2 gobblers on top again. I then realize there are 3 birds. I have hunted 4 times this past week & heard no gobbles on the ground.
Anyway, the bird I'm sit up on never makes another sound. I then get back up & go up the ridge again. This time I am able to sneak closer to the birds by hearing them. At this point I have yet to actually see any birds. I sit down & call and the 2 birds are just hammering but will not commit. I shut up for a bit hoping they would come in looking but nothing. I can't move any closer without spooking them (lots of leaves). I then just let the mouth call go. This sealed the deal. They are gobbling closer & closer. I finally see 1,2,& a 3rd. I only heard the 2 on top of the ridge. Anyway when they separated I put one down @ 25 steps. From the 1st gobble till the shot to the head it took 3hrs. Had a blast!
