I've had a great start to the season. My brother and I doubled up on Sat. Killed a nice bird with a 10 1//2 in beard and 1 inch spurs while my brother killed one with a 9 1/2 in beard and 1 inch spurs. Always fun chasing em with my brother.
On Sunday morning I took a guy who's never killed anything (deer or turkey) and he shot a jake. Man! He was a happy dude!
Then I had to go back to work on Monday. I have a spot close to where I work that is only about a mile down the road and I figured I would give it a go before I had to be at work at 7:30. I got there in plenty of time but the birds did not crank up unitl after six and it was too light to get very close so I ended up having to back out.
Yesterday morning, I woke up at 4:30 and headed back after them hoping I could set up closer to them and keep them up on the ridge with me. I lucked up and a longbeard was gobbling at 5:30 about 100 yards from where the hens were roosted the previous morning. I made a cirle and looped up on the ridge between the hens and the bird and took a seat just off of the logging road. He gobbled probably 25 times between 5:30 and 6:10. I gave him a few soft tree yelps and he screamed back at me! I shut up and let the hens behind me wake up. He was gobbling hard at them. At ten after six he hit the ground. I let out a short Pop Pop Pop Yelp Yelp Yelp and he climbed all over it. I got my gun up and he came marching down the logging road heading my way. He would walk about ten yards or so blow up and then gobble. He repeaded this all the way to 42 steps where I let him have a face full of Nitros. He was dead at 6:15. Double beard 9 in and 5 in and 1 3/16 spurs.
The only pics I have are on an old cell phone so no way to post pic but if someone shoots me a text ( 615-440-8748) I can send em your way.
Thanks.
