Turkeys around my house are pretty naive. So dumb, i usually give them a pass. This particular guy is always in my front crop fields . You could kill him with a sling shot lol. He is the most vocal bird i have ever heard. Car door shuts…. He gobbles. Dog barks….he gobbles. Basketball dribbles….he gobbles. I have several others that are pretty quiet and just strut for their harems with little commotion. Odd that something with such a small brain, can vary so much from individual to individual. I have triple beard bird who is always alone and never comes around the others but appears much larger. Odd.

You won't believe this, but I've got video to prove it. Twice over opening weekend one of our guys had similar experiences.

First experience I filmed sitting on the back porch of our cabin, a group of 3 Jake's walked up and he grabbed a decoy and walked to within 5 feet of them. He just hid behind the decoy. They were gobbling and everything.

Secondly, I wouldn't believe it if he hadn't filmed it. He killed a bird and was walking back to the cabin. A hen and a Jake walked up to him and he actually petted the Jake. Those two birds proceeded to follow him back to our cabin and hung out for a while. One even perched up on the roof of our bbq pit.

Never seen anything like it. Granted they were all young birds

I threw a handful of cat food at a group of 3 jakes back when I lived in the suburbs, they walked right up and ate it like chickens. They didn't live in the subdivision, they just passed through on occasion and were completely wild. The next year as longbeards they were more shy of people

Yeah, if i throw bread out the back door they will
Eat it

I never get tired of watching them. Easy to see how they were domesticated by the first European explorers.
They were originally domesticated by the Mayans in area of central or southern Mexico. Domesticated birds from the Mayan line were taken back to Europe by the Spaniards and returned to America by colonists after additional breeding in Europe.

While the Mayans may have been the first to domesticate,, early Europeans also brought other birds back (form multiple stock sources) to the old world to domesticate and develop other lines. All of which were intermingled and then line bred and brought back to the states which we now know as 'heritage' breeds. Giving the Mayans all the credit is probably inaccurate, as there were other native Americans who had also likely domesticated birds as well.
