Any recommendations for hearing protection while hunting? I never have, rifle shots during deer season never bothered me, and my hearing remains excellent.
But, last weekend I shot a turkey and the shotgun is SO much louder, I think. Ears rang for a long time.
Would normal amplified earmuffs (Peltor is what I use on the range), work in a turkey hunting situation? Any movement to put in plugs or put on muffs, and you are busted.

Wish we had muscles in our ears to close them up....

Makes mine ring as well, do they make muffs that cancel loud noises (gun shot) but without blocking out other sounds (gobbles, walking in leaves)?

You might want to look into those Walker's Game ear muffs. I reckon they amplify sounds up to a certain level then block or reduce loud sounds like a gun.

I've got a pair of the Walker Game Ear Muffs and I've used them in the past. In an ideal world, they would work great. But, during turkey season I found that I sweated in them too much and during both deer and turkey season you'd need to wear them all season to protect your ears from 2-4 shots all year. It finally got for me that they werent worth the trouble just for the protection you'd receive for the few shots you fire during deer and turkey season. But if you shoot enough without protection you'll eventually get some damage to your hearing. I know too many hunters who are in their 60s - 80s and are as deaf as posts. I always wear protection at the range, of course, and during dove hunts.
