Hello my name is Seth Cropley. I was an avid hunter from Maine that just moved to Gallatin TN and I see a lot of bucks around but I have heard it's hard to hunt in public land. Just looking for some tips and pointers on how to successfully hunt the deer in the area. Thank you for allowing me to join.

Thank you
Seth Cropley

Private land will be better. Ask around and if you're lucky, you might find someone who'll let you hunt. The TN property viewer website is invaluable.

Welcome from Middle TN. If you hunt with a bow try to find feed sign. Acorns are thin in areas this year but there are some out there. Bow hunt feed sign. Muzzleloader in early November and first week of gun season can be some of the best hunting of the season...hunt travel corridors and be patient...when hunting public, be patient, pack a lunch and hunt all day during the rut. Most everyone else will walk back to the truck and bump deer. Get an app like OnX and start studying locations your wanting to hunt then go put boots on the ground and scout...good luck hunting.

Welcome Seth, if you bow hunt public land is pretty decent because you will be one of a handful of folks hunting. When muzzleloader and gun seasons open is when public really does get difficult because of the pressure. Deer become harder to find. So go out with your bow! Old hickory WMA is near you. Having a small boat will increase your access to spots quite a bit on that WMA.

Might as well tell the whole story, because of the 100 yard law about half the land that was huntable isn't now because of all the houses that have been built bordering the wma land in the last 15 years which pushes that many more hunters onto what's left. Everybody and their brother seems to have a boat and an OnX app now so there's that and by the 3rd week of bow season/ after day 2 of muzzleloader season it's pretty much done cause the pressure drives the deer off those thin strips of wma onto the bordering private. Add to that the bordering land owners are very, very aware of trespassing and won't tolerate it, the situation is only gonna get worse as time goes on. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I've got 40 years of experience with it , and what I said is the truth of it. I wouldn't let it be my only option.
