Hi Guys,
Been following the boards for a good while now, but finally decided i need a log in. I'm in West TN and have killed my fair share of birds, but a hunt i had last wk has been stuck in my head ever since. I want to get you alls opinion on it. Last wk i headed in the woods around 1:00 pm. Started walking down an old logging road and heard a bird gobble at a crow. Went to where i though the bird was going to be due to high water and thickness of the woods. (It was pretty clean oak flat) Well i sit down and put out a decoy. About 20 mins into sitting, i let out a soft series of calls. No response. Another 15 goes by and i catch him walking parallel in front of me from my left to my right about 60 yards out. He is strutting this whole time. Now when i saw him, i never made a sound or moved. Then i catch movement behind him. It was his hen. She takes off on a light run and cuts him off in front and makes him kinda turn and walk away from me. (almost like she knew i was there) When they start heading away, I let out another light set of notes. He instantly blows up and spins and gobbles. This goes on for about 30-40 mins of him just standing there strutting. The hen pecks around and finally comes in to me about 30 yards with her head way up in the air looking. I guess she never saw the decoy. She works around feeding and scratching for about 10 mins while the whole time he is standing about 70 yards looking at her. Finally she moves back past him and takes him with her. After they are out of sight, I decided to call a little more aggressivly towards her in attempt to make her mad and maybe bring them both in. It worked and she came back to within 20 yards again, but he hung up at 60 yards gobbling and strutting the whole time. AGAIN!! Finally she works her back toward him and this time they both vanish. Now i never called while they were sight, and never moved. Only time i called was when i couldn't see them. The rain finally moved in so i got up and snuck over to where they were. No water, nothing that in my mind would make him hang up. What do you guys think he hung up on or i should have done differently?

Sounds like you played it well. Sometimes they win no matter what. I can't think of anything I would have done differently other than skip the decoy

The gobblers kind of follow the hen sometimes but not always. Remember these aren't whitetails. He was strutting, and it is her decision if she wants to breed or not. Lot of times as the hens start getting away from them, the gobblers gobble at them trying to call them back.

Like setterman said, sometimes they win no matter what.
