I'm going to get a new turkey vest this year, please help me with my selection. My typical hunt is on large areas of public land where I do a lot of walking in rough steep terrain so weight and breathability is important. I don't carry many turkey calls, usually just mouth calls but would want some space in case I did grab a pot call.Don't use decoys. I do carry 2 locator calls and want space for snacks, water, and other items though. I also want a well padded seat. I like the idea of the kickstand vests but feel like that would add to much bulk for my use. Any suggestions? Thanks

I purchased a tactical tater last year for late season run n gun hunts when it's warm. I think this would fit the bill pretty well. It doesn't hold much compared to my super elite 3 but it is much cooler to wear when the Mercury rises.

if you could find one of the original BuckLick Creek vest you would be set up. The new Redhead ones are not the same as the old style. I have hunted with mine forever.

After 20ish years with the same tattered vest I got an Ol'Tom Duralight last year. It works well enough for me but the magnets holding the seat in the up position were weak and needed to be modified. Compared to most hunters I'm a minimalist and other than the weak magnets this one works fine so far.

I'm planning on getting a cabelas tactical tatr this spring as it has been recommended several times to me

I bought a primos gobble in 2011. No complaints other than one zipper on a pocket failed. It was kinda of my fault though

Tactical tatr with kickstand and thank me later.

You can use the kickstand or you can sit beside a tree, if you choose to sit by a tree you can leave the kickstand up and use the frame for back support against the tree and its extremely comfortable

I switched over from a turkey vest (with the Bucklick type self-supported seat) to a turkey lounger seat/chair and a fanny pack with shoulder straps and liked the switch. The weight was about the same (if not lighter), and it was MUCH cooler. And, the lounger was more comfortable than the vest and seat.

The Redhead pack has two different zippered sections to keep the calls and other gear better organized.

Each system has some advantages, but I think my vest will stay in the closet again this year.

I went to a lounger seat last year also. Can't believe I waited so long to change. Also downsized to an Under Armour- Armourvent vest I got on clearance for $30 at Academy. It is a real simple vest.

I also hunt all day in the mountains and have found the following to be the best vest for my purposes.

https://www.underarmour.com/en-us/1242716/pid1242716

Under Armour Fast Track Vest.

Pros:
Not cotton and dries fast. I've sat through morning downpours and had a dry vest by the time I was done hunting that afternoon.
Pockets can be customized to how I want them
Vented back - awesome feature
I hang a 3 liter water bladder in the decoy spot in back but you could probably carry plenty of Capri Suns instead.

Cons:
The seat sucks. It's probably the worst seat on a turkey vest I've ever touched. I took it off and have improvised a plush gel seat in its place.

Steven, let me know if you want to take a look at it. I'm working up near Oak Ridge and could meet up.

From what you described, check out the Ol' Tom Essentials vest. It is light as a feather and will hold everything you described. I have one and use it heavily when the temps get hot and the "I need to carry everything" gets old.

yup

Sounds like you could get by with a fanny pack and one of those cheap cushions that you strap around your waist. I too pack light and have no desire for a vest, don't need the bulk.

Looks like Cabelas has pulled the tactical tatr from their website. Anyone know why? Maybe a new version coming for 2016?

It seems they only offer it around end of February-like may if I remember right they do tweak them a little evry year just keep an eye out for them

They always do so they can "release" them closer to season.

Yup. I was looking for one last year and had to wait until closer to the season before they actually showed up.
