I shot these a few years ago, and have been shooting Hevi-13 #6s since. Was going to go back to mag blends for a little down range knockdown, but someone told me they've changed the pellet count, and don't shoot as well. anyone heard this before I drop $60 on 2 boxes? Thanks

My gun shoots magblends and Hevishot 6's almost identical so I went with the 6's. I've heard too many stories about the blends having pellets smaller than 9's in them. But I've heard the 6's aren't very consistent either.

I can verify the blends having pellets smaller than 9s in them. After the above mentioned turkey finally got dead, I examined him. I couldn't figure out how he would drop and get right back up, so I skinned his head out. Found nearly a dozen pellets lodged between the skin and skull -- all of them tiny. The shells looked great on paper, but those tiny pellets are more than worthless much past 30 yards. They'll make holes in paper, but not a turkey skull.

After that I swore off the magblends, cut open a few that I had left, and discovered that they are NOT 5x6x7 -- they are every imaginable size and shape. Some round, some oblong, some stuck together in clusters, some stuck together making snowman shaped pellets, some (several) that were smaller than I would shoot at doves.

If I were going to shoot hevi, I would shoot straight 6s. They won't be super consistent in pellet size either, but they'll be better than blends.

Some of you may have seen this before, but take a look at these charts -- I found them very helpful. Hawglips (the author of this thread) is actually a member here, but he is really active on this other forum. He has tested and forgotten more about turkey shells and patterning than I could ever learn.

Also, if you're not familiar with the 18 g/cc shot that he's talking about -- it's a super dense tungsten that he (and many others, including myself) hand load with. Lead is around 11 g/cc in density, most HTL shot (including hevi) is 12-13 g/cc. A few of the best commercial loads use 15 g/cc. The 18 g stuff is special as far as patterns and energy go. It's the only stuff I know of that will allow you to kill turkeys at 50 yards with 9 shot diameter pellets.
