Last year a bunch of folks on the board complained that Mag Blends were not shooting very good, as compared to years before. Anybody got any follow-up? I'm down to 6 shells left that I purchased 3 years ago. I'm trying to decide if I should restock or try something else in my Mossberg 935.

My dad & I had some issues with them.

We started using the Longbeards last year and had good results (and cheaper)!

I saw inconsistent results. 2 awesome patterns, then 1 screwball. I dissected 2 to compare. Not uniform in packing, or pellet count in my opinion either.. My new theory is the multiple shot is packed differently shell to shell. Big fan of the Hevi- switched to stRaight # 5s hevi 13s- loss on pellet count, but consistent and downrange stopping power. I know there's haters on straight 5s, but if you can't hit em with 95 pellets in the 10in circle, and have the downrange knockdown, what good is 190 that can't knock em down or be consistent?
Plus, Gander in Jackson has Hevi13 3 in 5s for 21.99 for 5, plus 10% off, PLUS, the $10 rebate. $2 a shell for hevi-13. Beat that with a stick.

Since you went there...I'm curious to know everybody's view point on shot size. I've always shot mag blends but if i have to go to a straight shot size I need to know what's best??

You're going to get many different opinions. Here's mine. I refuse to shoot a bird over 50 yards. The extra density of hevishot over lead means that under 50 yards pellets larger than 6 aren't necessary. That's why I never tried 5s. A lot of folks swear by 7s. I've never tried them. I get the same numbers from 6s as I get from Magblends so I shoot 6s. One word of caution. If you go to straight shot size in hevishot for pellet consistency you might be disappointed if you cut one open. Hevishot isn't known for tight quality control on the pellets and you will find different sizes in there. This bothers me. When paying premium price I expect premium quality. But, as long as they keep knocking them dead I'll probably keep shooting them. Hevishot 6s throw some wicked patterns in my gun and are quite deadly.

my opinion is folks get WAY to into shooting paper instead of the results on a turkey. I am all about pattern testing and i do a TON of it each year, however i have seen what 7s and Magblends do to turkeys at close and far ranges and due to the results I am a believer in them. Ive seen more then 60 fall to the 7s and magblends and each one took obvious punishment! I have some Longbeards i may use one day and for lead i usually prefer 5 shot if you can get it to pattern (which i can in that shell)

whats "BEST" is what shoots best from your gun. I LOVED the 7s but they because hard to find, if you gun will pattern 6s in hevi shot then i would use those personally. Actually if you gun will pattern the Federal HeavyWeights 7s then i would use those first but people have issues getting them to pattern. I mean if you find a great deal on hevi 5s and your gun can shoot them then go for it!

Just last year changed my 870 barrel from a 28 to an 18 1/2 inch. It shoots the heavy magnum blends exceptionally well, much better than I thought it would with such a short barrel. Choke is Truglow Extreme.

Ended up just buying another box of Mag-blend 3.5s. They have served me well so I figure I will keep using 'em.

If it ain't broke don't fix it... Mossy 935 stock choke @ 40 yards

I was shooting the mag blends in my 835 and had no issues. Sold it and bought an 870 last year so I tried the longbeard 5's and they shoot great (pattern is posted in the subforum here). Killed 2 birds so I'm staying with them.

drxnupe...good choice staying with them if they are working for you. See my signature.
