I was about to go purchase a new target and then I got to thinking. I wonder if I could make use of this foam roll I have taking up space. I have over 100' of it and its about 42" tall and about 1/8" thick or so. It is actually pool wall foam for inground swimming pools. I put a pool in and they didnt use this. What do yall think? I guess I could just cut a bunch of it and stuff a burlap bag or box or something and see what happens. Or maybe try and create a layered target by making sheets of it. Dont know much else about it other than it is a high density closed cell foam.

If you put something around it to tighten it up it should work fine. If you have access to the vinyl banding material they use to strap crates and stuff up that would work pretty good.

I was afraid it might shoot back at me :). I thought it would be great to cut into sheets and use as a layered target but I dont have access to a banding setup to compress it.

Something like this

I was just thinking ratchet straps may work. Or if I wanted to get real fancy I could use plywood on the top and bottom with threaded rod in the 4 corners and tighten them down to compress it. I could cut the foam in something like 2x2 or 3x3 sheets and stack them however high I wanted. It should end up looking like a redneck version of this

The best part is that the foam I have is closed cell so it wont hold water, should last a long time.

Let me know how it works out. How much ($cost$) is that type of foam material? Wonder which is more economical. I probably have everything to make one except the foam. I was tossing around some ideas about ratchet strap or threaded rod and/or finding some way to squash it with the front end loader on the tractor and then tighten/screw it down all together.

Well I got the foam free (When I spent $20+k on a pool that is). Here is a shorter roll of it at wally world, if they stock it who knows. If it works good I could see building several of them cheaper than a top brand commercial one. I may hit the old mans house and use the front end loader to if it seems beneficial over the other methods.

Might be a good deal, might could make more than one, but for $40 I will probably save myself some very precious much needed time and just buy one I suppose.

I would to if I didnt have the stuff. I like saving money, but not more savings than that and I would probably buy one. I dont know if I will build this one or not, I mostly shoot field points at home anyway. Will see.

The threaded rod would be much, much better and will allow for better compression and more adjustability later on.

A company by the name of Third Hand Archery sells what they call a rag bag. It is an unfilled bag like on the commercial bag targets that you put your arrow stopping filling into. They are very UV resistant and durable. I bet you could cut your foam to fit and have a great target.

I have two of the rag bags set up in my yard for shooting. One is 10 yds behind the other to give me some distance options and spread out the arrows a little better to keep down the breakage.

2x6 or 2x8 on top and bottom with threaded rod through each piece to compress the layers.

that stuff would be perfect for a target, ive shot the same target for 3 years now and all it is, is a box that is full of shrink wrap. not good for broadheads but considerin i got paid to make it i think it was alright. my buddy has one that is just 3 couch cushions thats stuffed in a box
