• Help Support TNDeer:

Hope ruger dont kill me for this lol

It only works if and where people are picky about it. I am picky about it, and it has affected what I shoot vs what I pass. But at the same time, there's plenty of guys hunting the same land I do that are perfectly content shooting a yearling 6 point, and I can't tell em not to. Everyone's got their different goals when it comes to deer hunting.

Look at Kentucky for example. One buck limit, and there's some big ones up there no doubt. But the area I bowhunted back in September was not as good as I had expected. I saw one decent buck while scouting, could have shot him if it wasn't so thick.

Anyway, I ran into a local up there and we got to talking. He said people around there wait till gun season, go hunting, shoot the first buck they see and quit hunting. They don't wait for a big one, they just shoot their buck just to shoot their buck. He also said there was a big problem with people baiting on public land which is illegal, baiting is only legal on private up there.

So what that told me is that a buck limit reduction may help in some areas, but across the board it doesn't make that much a difference.

Now that I'm tagged out, I wish the limit was 3 again. I have nothing to complain about, but I did have a heavy horned, mature deer showing up during daylight on public this year that I really wanted to kill, and since I shot the 11 in my backyard I have to wait another year to hunt that spot, and hope nobody else beats me to it.

Yeah I agree I was just aggravating because if you remember the first year it was implemented people said they could already see the progress. But on the other hand I haven't killed a buck in 10 years. Come close this year so far but I am picky as well. I hunt alot of the same public you do I met you at camp a couple years ago. That particular place we hunted was like you said above, there was two guys that shot a big six because the with was legal and a small 8 because it had enough points. The kicker was after a conversation with them they said they was gonna give the deer away they just want the horns because they were bonus bucks so I know what you mean In your post everyone has a different outlook and purpose of the 2 bucks.

I don't even hunt that place very often. I normally hunt areas open to statewide season, so the age structure just ain't all that great. But if you put in the time and effort, you'll find a few honey holes where more deer can get older and feel safe showing up during daylight.

Either way, it doesn't change the mentality of different types hunters...some just want horns to grab, some just want meat, and some just want bigger older deer. I have no problem with it, we all have our own goals.

The only thing that bothers me is the all too common mentality of making excuses. "Can't eat the horns" and "meat in the freezer" are excuses we've all heard for shooting a smaller deer than you really wanted to shoot, trying to gain the approval of other hunters by making an excuse for it. Shoot what you want, whether it's a spike, a doe, or a 150" 10 point, and be proud of it, don't make excuses. If you have to make excuses, you probably should have let the deer walk.

I Am a fan of a 1 buck limit as people would be more selective but i dont think it will make a huge difference due to the low percentage of hunters that actually kill 2 bucks. People that are gonna kill any age bucks are gonna kill their bucks regardless of number of tags. Meaning a guy that will shoot a basket 8 with 2 tags will shoot the same with 1 tag.

Missouri allows 2 bucks but only 1 with a rifle or muzzleloader. The second buck must be with a bow. You also can only kill 1 buck before rifle season starts. I liked the structure of it and they also had some counties that were 4 points on one side. It definitely made the bucks grow bigger. I shot a few good deer while I was up there for school. It all depends what you want out of the season and I definitely don't think there is one right way to do it. What makes one person happy will completely piss off the next one.
