Well after one of the most crazy and bizarre seasons I've ever had, I finally got to put my hands on a deer. It seemed like every time I got to go hunting from the start of the season, that something would go horribly wrong. Either I'd have dogs come through running deer, deer just plain bust me, people come in on me, or plain shooting a big doe and not being able to recover it due to a jerk. Then when the time changed, we started working 10 hr shifts and that meant going in at dark and getting off at dark = no hunting. ML rolled around and I never got to go because of work. Then rifle rolled around and I came down with Swine Flu, and missed a week of work and hunting, and THEN came down with pneumonia on top of that, and there went another week.
So anyway yesterday I FINALLY got an 8 hour day and I didn't care that it was bow season, I just wanted to go hunting. I got in one of my stands at 4 p.m. and hadn't even settled in yet. I pulled my bow up, took a swig of Pepsi, and heard something behind me. Turned and there walked a deer right towards one of my shooting lanes. I stood up and put my first Rage broadhead into a deer. BOY WAS I IMPRESSED!! Great blood trail; actually a no brainer one. I was a little disappointed when I recovered it, that it was a button buck. I had been seeing lots of them back in early bow season and letting them go. But hey, no shame to me. It's a legal deer and will eat just the same. Note the size of the hole. This is the entrance. The exit was almost identical. I think this is the latest in the year I've ever killed a deer with my bow. Maybe I'm just now gonna get started thwacking.
