I'm curious as to how birds in different areas of the state are acting. Good ground gobbling, responsive to calling, still lots of hen competition, workable in the morning/afternoon, still bunched up a bit?

In the last week, birds here in Hardeman were really starting to act right. Single lone gobblers at 8-9am, bachelor groups of 4-5 with no hens late in the day, birds occasionally hollering on their own midday...it's really getting right now. I've also seen some single hens late morning and in the afternoons in "nesty looking" areas. I'm thinking laying is well underway. There's still a few boss birds with numerous hens but nothing like 2 weeks ago.

What are you seeing in your area and what will the next couple of weeks look like?

I feel like they are being normal. Hens are definately starting to split, and may not nessacarily all be nesting, but are at least looking for a nesting spot. In general though, I think that half or most of the hens are starting to lay a few eggs.

Gobblers are starting to loose their hens mid to late morning. And moving more during the day.

Seem to be responding to calling.

Afternoon is tough, but it always is. You just have to get lucky that a gobbler is actually vocal.

Next week should be good, but the last week of April and First week of May will be best. Most hens will be setting by then, gobblers will be ready to be killed.

Most are henned up beyond belief they gobble sparingly on the limb and none on the ground. They're pretty much unkillable for the moment

There are a few single two or three year old birds still roaming, some will play and when they do they die. But a bunch are whipped into submission or have been shot at already and are really tough.

It's tough to say the least here right now, but that's normal for this part of the season
