Doing some scouting on Sat morning and watching a ridgeline that consistently holds turkeys.
I hear a lone gobbler fly down and start working his way North through the trees on the hillside. Gobbles every 20yds or so.
At the same time, a lone hen is about 50yds down the hillside from him, in the open, working her way South. She is calling continually.
They about ran into each other, but both pass each other likes ships in the night, not once even acknowledging the other's presence, and keep calling.

Gonna be a long season for some of these birds.

Every year early in the season I run across lone hens that are extremely vocal. I feel these are Jennie's who've either been booted from a breeding flock or not sexually mature yet and choose to look for non breeding groups to roam with. I also believe turkeys know each other inside their own territories, thus that gobbler knows that's Suzie, she's a prude and nothing but a waste of his time and effort.

Back in the day when i was running the ridges (nightlife establishments) I didn't always take up with the first Jennie or Suzie I ran into. Then again other days I was not so hard to get. Thinking this way relates to many days I spend in the turkey woods.
