How do you pick where to go?

It seems every year I stress and worry about where to go. With deer hunting I can let the wind tell me what I need to do but with turkeys it's just a crap shoot if your not able to be there before the season.

I'm confused by your question it's pretty easy really. They tell you were they are.

Deciding where to go is the easiest part, what happens when you get there is a different story

I've got one place that I have permission to hunt. I just try to get up top on one of the many Ridges and go where he tells me to lol.
I don't roost them the evening before or anything like that.
When I hear one Gobble I'll head his way.

You must have access to several different properties.

I have that dilemma at times. Some depends on if I feel others might also have access. I hit those first, and "save" the others for other times :D !

I also save some for mornings when I can only hunt for a short period if they are fairly close.

I don't even scout or listen ahead of the season anymore but just get up on a high spot, pick a bird, and go to him.

Listen

Go where you know the turkeys like to hang out. Try to strike a bird. If no luck, go to another area. I like to give it at least half an hour before I move, if I have made any hen calls. There's no need to worry about which spot to go. If you have seen turkeys, turkey sign, or heard turkeys in the area recently, then go hunt and don't worry about it

This is part of my dilemma. Do I hunt the places that are hunted by others trying to kill before they do. Risking getting screwed up by other people and not killing.

Ahhh, I see your question.

If I had 2 places one all to myself and one hunted by others I'd go to the lonely place first, and circle back to the other later. Sure a bird or two will likely be gone, but the chances of getting screwed by another hunter are less as the season progresses. Most hunters are somewhat clueless so the chances they kill every bird very slim. Later in the season the older more dominant birds should lose hens and be more vulnerable then they were early.

Or bait the yugo out of a place and have an easy guarantee :rotf:

90% of my hunting is on one particular mountain in South Cherokee NF. The other 10% is divided between a few other mountains in the forest. I don't listen before season. It drives me crazy to hear them gobble and not be able to hunt them :) I'll start Saturday morning on a strategic high point where I can hear and take "inventory" on what is vocal. Turkeys always seem to set up in the same places each spring in my experience. I'll hunt every day of season and work my way around the mountain, switching from spot to spot, maneuvering amoungst the googans :D

I'm like you,I quit getting out before the season begins to listen for gobbles,Ive hunted my spots long enough to pretty much know where they are year after year.Turkeys are kinda like deer, they have favorite places to be in breeding season
