I just watch a video on youtube and this guy was hanging his trail camera about 10 feet off the ground on public land. Said it was because of thieves, so it got me wondering if any of you all do the same?"
I've hung cameras that high before but just for effect. I'm not real worried about theft but "out of reach" can serve to deter it. You limit your effective range by shooting down at a sharper angle.
I do it on several of my cameras, especially on public land. It works well if you have a target like a mineral site or a high traffic area. It's a good tactic for eliminating sun glare and false triggers. It also keeps many deer from seeing the camera, which helps a lot if you have a red IR flash.
All my public land cameras are as high as I can get them for security reasons. I take a set of Summit climbing sticks in with me. not any trouble at all. Private property cameras go up about waist high.
This camera is about 12 feet up the tree and is aimed out toward the middle of the food plot. It's an old-model Spypoint camera, so ignore the picture resolution. A modern camera would be much better.
