A lot of posters thought I was crazy when I said the below-pictured summer-time buck was at least 3 1/2. And I understand why, as his antlers and body definitely didn't match what most know a 3 1/2 year-old buck will look like close to the rut:

But look at how much body mass he has put on now, and his neck hasn't yet finished filling out. He's turned into a real toad. Yes, he's at least 3 1/2 and possibly older:

Definately a significant change. Boy, I cant believe how much usage you got out of your first year new food plots. Our deer hardly ever hit ours following logging

Interestingly, the deer are really focusing on the small log-loading plots where we spread very old bags of BioLogic Phertilizer. Honestly, that stuff was the best product BioLogic ever made. I wish they still sold it.

I remember seeing all the pictures you had in your "log-landing plots" several weeks ago. We havent hardly seen any deer in our "log-landing plots" yet. Though in the past, our smaller foodplots (20 yards X 20 yards) produced ALOT of deer. When the lime truck comes up sometime in December, you better believe they will be liming all those little plots

Yup, the above picture in the "food plot" is a plot less than 1/10th of an acre. Just about 15 yards across. A log-loading deck converted to tiny food plot.

didn't that stuff have Pel-lime mixed in with it? May be why stuff reacted so well to it

What worked so well was the ultra-fine grinding of the lime, down to 100% passage through a 200 mesh. It makes the lime react very, very quickly in the soil (although it doesn't last as long as regular ag lime).

Bryan,

What is date of first pic? What clues did you notice about this buck in the first picture that led you to believe he was 3.5+? Was it something on his body/frame that I am missing, was it your past history with this particular buck (trail cam pics), both of these, or something all together different? The first picture really has me stumped on 3.5+, the second, not so much. I have a feeling the camera angle in the first picture may not be helping the situation either. Let's hear it.

Is this deer on the hit list???

It is now that I'm sure he's at least 3 1/2.

I'll be the first to admit that I often change my mind about a summer buck's age once I see him in full rut. I'm just glad I wasn't wrong about this guy.

Still not convinced he's 3.5 just yet... I might give him a couple more weeks just to be sure. In the second pic, he still looks like a 2.5 that has fed for 30 minutes before getting his pic taken. You'll know for sure by Nov 1. But in any case, he's added 35 lbs since the first pic.

My goodness if that is not a 3.5 I will eat my hat,I would almost said the first pic . was a 3.5 if you look at the way his neck is swagged and his belly swagging.
You cannot look at the rack ,it will throw you every time.
But I will agree with Andy if his head would have been turned toward the cam It would have been more evident.

It will be interesting to see how much his neck fills out by Nov. 1. If he doesn't add much more mass in the neck, I'll just consider him an exceptionally big-bodied 3 1/2 year-old.

BSK,

I don't think it's the same deer. The one in the first picture has some fuzzy stuff on it's horns while the one in the bottom picture doesn't. I know they are both pointed left which leads you to believe it's the same deer, but take a better look at the horns and the fuzzy stuff and you'll see they are different.

Glad I could be of help as always.....
