Any advice ? You know that bird that you think is coming and gets 80 yards and then the next time you hear him he is 300! I usually think he has a hen and she leads him away. I have hung around and killed them later in the morning by simply doing enough to make him gobble So I can keep up with his where abouts and waiting on him to lose his hen . I have had one give me fits this morning and tomorrow is the last day of the hunt. I am sure he was laughing as I hit a totally different road and started the 3 mile walk back to my truck! I am just stubborn enough to be up for another beat down in the morning if I can get the spot again. Any advice? Anyone have a different approach on an aggravating bird like this. I normally would just go after him til season ends and catch him without a hen but that is not an option! Thanks

Change calls, hunt him from a different direction, then hope his mood changes

I switched calls, moved to different sides of the ridge as he moved and did all I could think of. I suspect you are right Mick, I should probably move on but I can't resist the challenge and beating I will take again in the morning! At least I found a better way in so I don't have to cross a clearcut and climb a mountain in the morning.

I would probably take a break from him for a little while but, I don't blame you for trying. I would probably keep after him a little. I had one about 10 years ago that about drove me nuts. Chased him hard for 2 mornings and found out where he was going and got him the 3rd morning. He only weighed 17 1/2 lbs.

I hate those types, they always lure you back in when you're ready to leave them to give it one more try. Only thing I've had work is circle in front and hope they don't switch directions. The majority of times it's hens causing this behavior and it's a track meet

Oh yeah, he answers. I had him this morning and totally blew my set up. I caught him alone as he was moving and free gobbling. I went his way and didn't realize he was coming faster than I thought. I went off the side of the road bed into a pine thicket as he gobbled and he was close. I thought I could kill him as I could see decent, however to my left was some bad underbrush. I clucked and he hammered, I set the call down. He went back and forth gobbling . At this point I knew I should have went down the pines and circled up behind him on the ridge but ever cautious I sat. He finally broke and sounds off 50 yards from me, I can't see him. I am thinking he is going to come in the open area to my right . A crow flies over and he gobbles so close that it startles me and of course he is to my left! I can't see him at all. He goes by and I make a move to where he was on the ridge thinking he will come back to where he had been for so long. Plus I wanted out of the pines. Last time I heard him he was 400 or so away. Whipped again by him , my own set up cost me! Hindsight I know I should have circled to the ridge. Been doing this 38 years and I still learn a lesson from them every year! I absolutely love it!

Love playing the game with them! This season I can't even really find one that wants too...

He will probably come back looking for that hen he answered earlier but hes got all day, do you?

Although there are plenty of Gobblers that will move FAST once they hit the ground to get to a preferred location(strut zone), many times it is more than one Gobbler you are listening to.

Yeah. I've experienced that a few times.

I didn't have all day, hunting ended at noon as I was on a quota hunt it was over today. Totally agree Cowhunter , I was on a bird one year that was very similar , I ended up killing a different one while keeping up with the first one. The one I killed came in so fast that I barely got sit down! It can get confusing some times. I knew better on that set up but he was so close I thought I could pull it off. I got in too big of a hurry to get things going. Totally on me!
