gobbling been a little slow compared to last year, but on thursday i hunted one bird for 3.5 hours and he gobbled the entire time. made 3 different setups and finaly saw him, at 80 yards. i called him and his 3 hens from about 500 yards across a cattle pasture, cedar bog, and a cutover thicket until they circled behind me. they were about 8 feet behind me and all i could do is sit there. they knew something was up so circled back around in the thick cutover and came out on top of the hill. probably the biggest gobbler i have saw yet. i tried to outcall that old hen he was with, but the louder and nastier i got, the louder she got. she was pulling hens out of the woodwork, they were running past my decoys and heading to her direction. as i was disgusted at myself, an ambulance sounded off and he gobbled as if laughing at me. laugh on old tom, you will be mine.!!
something strange though, last year, the mature birds were with a dozen hens each at least. the last big gobbler i killed last year was roosted by at least 15 hens and this was on april 26th. this year, the hens that i saw flydown were 1 and sometime only 2 hens roosting together. the only thing i can figure is that they are way ahead of their breeding schedule compared to last year.
