If you want some good hushpuppies and don't want to make your own I have found some that really are amazing.
They sell them at walmart and they are in a white bag with black lettering. Real generic looking package.

That is what they are called.
I have cooked them several times and they are absolutely amazing.
I have deep fried them and my wife has cooked them on a cookie sheet in the oven and both ways are absolutely great.
In fact I think I like them better out of the oven than I do the grease.
Only complaint I have is they are kinda small and you gotta keep going back. :)

Seriously they are great.
 
I have often wondered where the hush puppy came from. The only theory that I have come up with is that the original inventor did not want to waste the leftover seasoned cornmeal and egg wash from cooking the fish so they mixed them together and cooked them in the grease after the fish was done.
 
thanks ruger for the heads up.we had a catfish lunch for the eclipse at work .Greedy bastards ate all the hush puppies and chicken wings before some of us could return to shop for lunch.Long story short,i have been craving chicken wings and hush puppies and will definitely pick some of these up this week to try this weekend.
 
I have yet to meet a hushpuppie I didn't like. I am more of a House Autry type myself....
 
Will have to try but chaney lake posted a great recipe and I lost it,any body still have it kicking around?
 
must be already made otherwise baking wouldn't work. I am getting some today for sure. Don't exactly know where the hush puppie aisle is but I will find it.
 
As I understand it hushpuppies originated during the Civil War. Around the campfire at night while the soldiers were cooking dinner they'd have dogs hanging around and constantly barking. The cornmeal mixture they cooked up was fast and easy and they'd throw these to the dogs to hush them up.

easy now dont be spreading that around or the commies will be wanting to rid us of those dang racist hushpuppies.
 
I loves me some hushpuppies.. Years ago I worked at Capt Ds. We made hushpuppies fresh. Buttermilk, eggs, onions, salt, cornmeal and some flour. Bigger volume than just a home fish fry. But when I do them now I use the same recipe of interigrents just not the volume..and sometimes I add some peppers or Cajun spice. ..Same for when I just do cornbread pones. And I don't do sweet puppies or cornbread..fish fry or beans taters and cabbage...I don't do sweet cornbread at all. And yes I love me a glass of milk with a good piece of cornbread tore up and dunked in as a snack, or maybe buttermilk.

Not trying to trump your tip as that is what my mother used for years and years but a cookie dough scoop works even better!! Same technique with the water but not as often, can scoop 4-5 puppies before rinsing in water.
Make sure it is a cookie dough scoop as it is the perfect size, an ice cream scoop is way to big.

In our Walmart they are in the open freezer section between the frozen seafood and the hamburger/ chicken section. I just noticed them and wondered how good they were. May have to try them.
