I guess I'm getting soft in my middle age

Got a notification yesterday on my phone. Took me a minute to figure it out.

This clever tree rat flipped my camera around and THEN made sure to take a selfie for me.

Not feeling great, and hadn't gone down to fix the camera yet. Got a pic of him again this morning coming out of the tree. So I threw on my boots and walked down to the food-plot quietly.... sure enough, there he is. Cheeks ful of acorns(?), kinda looked like he was smiling. Raised the .22 .... settled the crosshairs on him. And chuckled.

He ran off like it was his choice to be alive.

So I fixed the camera back, took a test picture, and gave him a thumbs down.

Guess I'm getting soft. :)

Yeah no kidding.
Go out with my .50 muzzleloader and you'd swear a squirrel truck dropped a load off.
Go out with my .22, Nothin.
 
If you don't get soft sometimes you got no heart. I'll shoot a doe if she's being nosy and I'll shoot a squirrel cause it won't quit barking. But they all have a fair chance to get away and I don't always get a clean shot.

I usually kill armadillos on sight, they're overpopulated. But I've caught a bunch of them, just for fun, and let them go. I can't bring myself to kill something that I just walked up to and grabbed by the tail. Hunting ain't always about killing.

I also got soft about possums for some reason. I still kill them if I catch em in a coon trap, I know they will raid a turkey nest. But I don't shoot them on sight like I used to, I kinda like em for some reason.

Wife said she sees him coming out of it everytime she hunts, so I guess it is.

I guess I should have asked for permission before hanging the camera. I'm not paying him any money though.
