made it to my little spot on public land at 4.35am before anyone else. Hopefully nobody will come in and screw things up later. If that happens, I have 2 copies of a satellite image map of the WMA and my phone with GPS and google maps. And I have been to a few other places on this WMA.

But lets hope this is the spot.

had 2 hens fly down and land 5 steps from me and walk by. Then a jake came by and got suspicious and left. Then I tried scratching in the leaves only to realize there was another jake or two sneaking in silently. They left too... But there are birds out here for sure and I've heard several shots already.

go ahead and bust you a jake. Dude, bird on the ground on your first hunt and solo at that. You will get props from anyone, especially any one that has been doing it awhile. If I wanted to see anyone get a bird today, it is you my friend.

x2, you saw more than I saw this morning. Heard several gobbling off in the distance. Gonna give it another go tomorrow.

No birds killed today, but I saw plenty. was within 5 yards of 3 different birds and 10 yards of 2 others and took a couple bad shots at about 60 yards as a desperate last attempt at a longbeard out in a big field. I'll tell it all in a different thread. Glad I got to see some birds and get close enough to see the 1 inch beard on that jake...

Sounds like a good day - lots of times those 60 yd shots out into a field from within the edge of the woods actually wind up being 75-80 yds in reality. Weird optical illusion can cause you to misjudge the distance pretty badly from in the woods.

I was lying prone in the middle of the field, but it could have been closer to 75-80 yards, if only I had closed the distance between me and the thicket, I would have had more cover and a lot closer shot. I was afraid of spooking the bird or him popping out behind the thicket before I got a chance to set down again. I guess taking the risk would have paid off, I could have easily ambushed him from 30-40 yards.

it is also easy for them 40 yard shots to step off to 60-65..

anyways it sounds like you had a good time,,and in the end thats all that matters
