with this bird. My daughter killed it Saturday. Measurements that i get are 27.5 lbs. 10.5 beard and 1 3/4 spurs on each side. I get 83.5. Is this correct? Thanks

I don't know about score but 27.5 lbs sounds way heavy for a bird in this part of the world. I've weighed a few over the years to say the least and I've never seen 24 lbs broken

He is pretty big Setterman. NWTF is coming to score him soon. Just wondering if my measurments were accurate.

That is correct!

Maybe. If measurements stand, a state record for women? From what i gather, the record is 78. Thanks

Problem will be they start losing weight as soon as they hit the ground. Did you have it weighed on a certified scale? How do you prove the weight?

I weighed him on some scales i got from Richard's Sporting Goods. That's pretty much what got my interest up on this bird. Personally thought he was about 24 lbs.

Cheaper scales are very unreliable, I just don't want you to get your hopes up to find out the bird weighed about avg for this area around 21 lbs. I've seen most scales other than truly certified scales overweigh birds by almost 10 lbs.

A bird that heavy would be really rare and surprising, unless he's been fed very very well all winter.

I have 2 Berkely 50 lb. digital fish scales I brought to work and checked with certified precision weights from 1 ounce to 50 pounds. One was dead on and one was one ounce off throughout the whole range. It is possible to get a cheap accurate scale.

I guided a kid on the youth one yr around 2008, I remember it was March 20 very early for even the youth hunt. We were in Henry Co TN on a farm that hadn't been turkey hunted ever at least to the landowners knowledge. I called a monster bird in for the boy 28.5lbs(actually broke my scale) 11.5" paint brush, and
1 7\8" spurs.....By far the biggest bird I have ever seen....I wish we would have had him officially measured. The taxidermist said it was one of the 3 biggest birds he had seen in 40yrs in the business.....So, yes I would say its very possible to kill a bird this big in TN, especially this early in the season. They lose a lot of weight later on during the breeding process.

I agree that the weight is not the norm, but I will not say it is not possible. As Setter eluded to, it may have been fed GREAT over the winter, and we all know it was an mature bird with those daggers. Good luck with your daughter's trophy and tell her those spurs are more to be proud of than five 30# birds.

I'm just happy she got him. I guess I am more curious about the measurements than anything. I've never seen a bird this big.
