Gobbler with hens at 100 yards. Nothing between me and him but dirt. I pulled out the fan and started crawling when I hit 80 yards they all ran like hades. Well that's all of that I need to do. Not like tv! lol
 
I think you'll note that today's fanners are primarily using an umbrella sized fan....which covers up the whole body. I tried it a couple years ago on private property, but the grass was probably 2' high....and I only had a real fan...it works....but I am certain like you saw today that it doesn't work all the time....and some times/situations works better than others.

That's weird. I've never had that happen before. Every one I've ever fanned I got a shot within 30 yards.
 
I've got one of the full strut decoys from years ago because a buddy told me about how they just ran to it. Well every tom that saw it went the other way so it's been sitting in my barn ever since. I hardly ever use any decoy these days.

most that I see are using real tail fans. The umbrella fan is one particular product and I'm sure a lot of people have bought and used them, but all the videos I've seen were full strut decoys with real fans, or just real fans.

The gobbler may have hens but there could still be a more dominant bird around the area...still possible for a bird to shy from the fan sometimes. I think it's supposed to work really well on a boss tom that always has the ladies. I want to give it a shot just once.

It works well on boss birds or in groups of toms that are still establishing the pecking order...one other instance I had a group of 5 jakes come out of nowhere when I was fanning a big Tom...they we're gonna bum rush my fan or me lol so I spooked them...next time I try it I'm gonna use a make fan to see if that makes any difference
